Designing Woman

The 16 quilters in my Calendar Girls group decided to donate a quilt to the Sutter Hospital Breast Cancer Auction coming up this September. They do this every 3 years and receive over 300 quilts each time to raise funds for their cancer center. We call this quilt "Hearts For Hope".  It's only a top at the moment but with the quilting we plan to add, we hope it raises a good bit for their cause.

Judy's UFO Challenge has actually gotten me to finish 3 quilts this year and I intend to keep it up. She picked #4 for April and this is the top that awaits me. . . . . I love this quilt which was a mystery class I took three years ago. I want to quilt it with multi-colored, variegated thread, maybe feathers or some other wonderful pattern but I'm just not sure I'm good enough to do it justice. Think I should pay a long-armer to do it for me?

Check out what everyone else has on their design walls  HERE, on Judy's wonderful blog!

NO! do you have access to charity quilts that you can practice on? That's what I've been doing to get better at the stuff I'm not terrific at. Or just put muslin on to practice with. I plan my design and then do it on paper (only because I have big sheets left over from a move.) And then I give it a try on a charity quilt and then on my quilt. Folks are so happy to get the charity quilts actually quilted. It is a great way to get better at long arming.

Oops... I made an assumption that you were a long armer... I'm not sure I would volunteer to do charity quilts on a regular sewing machine. But the practice bits are correct. Size was always my determining factor to quilt on my domestic machine. I still slap small qilts on it cause it is just easier for me. Good luck..

The heart quilt is just perfect for its intended purpose.

I love both quilts. The hearts are just wonderful for a charity. Very nice.

love both quilts, amazing! I think the multi colored thread with feathers on the mystery quilt would be incredible. Would I pay to have it quilted? First I would do a practice run with black fabric and colored thread, if you don't like it or feel comfortable, definitely pay someone. It's a wonderful quilt. But really I think you can do it!

Love your mystery quilt and I agree that a multi variegated will look wonderful on it!

Your donation quilt is great and very appropriate. Love the other quilt, and I think a multi colored thread will work and you'll do a great job on it!

I am positive that you can quilt this yourself. I have seen your quilting and you can do this one for sure!
I just wouldn't use black thread on black background... that is too hard.

Both quilts are beautiful. I think feathers would really enhance the mystery quilt.

Love!! Those quilts are great. I am working on UFO's also, just not as organized about it as you are. I looked up the LilTwister ruler today and it looks pretty cool!! I may give it a try.
